VEHICLE MALFUNCTION LEADS TO GRASS FIRE

June 24, 2026 9:50 a.m.

A vehicle malfunction led to a grass fire on Tuesday afternoon.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 1:50 p.m. a Bandon man was driving a low-boy truck near the intersection of Nonpareil Road and Old Pioneer Road in the Sutherlin area.  The hood latch on the low-boy broke and the hood swung up. This caused the hood to hit a phone line, breaking it, which led to a grass fire.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association and other fire agencies responded to the fire. It was successfully knocked down after a time. Westbound traffic was rerouted onto Plat K Road, while crews continued working in the area.

Information was exchanged between the vehicle driver and the utility service company.
