WARMING CENTER TO OPEN SATURDAY NIGHT

December 17, 2022 10:00 a.m.

The Roseburg Warming Center will be open an extra night this week, offering shelter to unhoused people Saturday evening, then seeking wash day volunteers on Sunday.

A City of Roseburg release said the center, located at the Roseburg Senior Center, on Southeast Stephens Street will then close for the foreseeable future. Check-in begins at 6:00 p.m. with 60 cots available for guests and volunteers. Unhoused individuals can arrive any time during the night, according to warming center operator Kimetha Stallings.

Help is being sought to clean the facility starting at 12:00 p.m. Sunday. Volunteers will begin by carrying bedding laundry from the center to pickup trucks, transporting the laundry to a laundromat, where it will be loaded into washing machines. Volunteers will also help move bedding into dryers and then folding, bagging and transporting clean laundry back to the center, where the bedding will be put in storage.

Stallings thanked senior center members as well as 25 people who volunteered so the shelter could be open this week.

Saturday the senior center will provide a free shuttle to make one circuit around town to pick up guests between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and then drive people back in the morning. A cot, blanket and pillow plus a hot dinner and breakfast are provided to anyone staying the night.

Donations that can be used include jackets, gloves, sleeping bags and hand warmers. The City may pay for center operating costs, if needed.

Volunteers are needed Saturday to staff the facility for the evening. People interested in helping can text Stallings at 541-236-2098 or comment on the Facebook post about the opening at: www.facebook.com/Warming.Center.Onward
