The Applegate House Heritage Arts and Education has received a $5,000 grant from the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation, in its most recent round of giving.

The grant was among nearly $650,000 the foundation granted to charities in Douglas and six other counties

AHHAe was founded in 2000 and is dedicated to promoting the arts and history of settlers and Native Americans in north Douglas County, and to the conservation of the Charles and Melinda Applegate House, which was built in 1852, outside of Yoncalla. The organization sponsors a variety of events and activities in and around the house.

A release said the Cow Creek Foundation grant will be combined with grants from other foundations, funds and individual contributions to replace the roof on the Charles and Melinda Applegate House with a historically appropriate fire-resistant synthetic shake roof. The total project cost is $66,230.

The roof project will be completed in August of this year.
