52 PROTESTORS ARRESTED AFTER INTERSTATE FIVE WAS BLOCKED IN LANE COUNTY

52 people were arrested after a section of Interstate Five was blocked in Lane County on Monday.

An update from Oregon State Police said at approximately 10:00 a.m. troopers responded to the southbound freeway lanes near the Barlow Bridge in the Gateway Area between Eugene and Springfield after reports came in that protestors were blocking the interstate.

Throughout the incident, demonstrators were given continuous lawful orders to disperse before the arrests began, according to OSP. At least one individual was discovered to be in possession of a firearm. Two people were additionally charged with conspiracy and second-degree theft. Six vehicles were towed from the scene.

Freeway traffic was stopped for approximately 45 minutes.

Over 120 officers, deputies and troopers from OSP, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and police departments in Eugene and Springfield worked on the situation. Additional assistance came from the Oregon Department of Transportation and fire departments in Springfield and Eugene.

The OSP update said the agency supports an individual’s right to lawfully protest and express concerns over world events. OSP said Monday’s actions put motorists in danger as well as the protestors who blocked the roadway.

Media reports indicated that protestors were representing Free Palestine Eugene.
