Cooler, wet weather has allowed the Douglas Forest Protective Association to begin issuing burn permits for back yard debris burning within the Douglas District.
Kyle Reed of DFPA said the permits are free of charge but do require an onsite inspection from a DFPA Forest Officer before a permit can be issued.
Reed said burn permits will only be given out for small debris piles consisting of yard debris. They will not be issued for burn barrels, or for large piles that were constructed by machinery. The burning of materials such as garbage, tires, rubber or any other material that normally emits dense smoke and/or noxious odors are prohibited. Reed said a burn permit does not waive the landowner’s liability if the burn escapes containment. He said the permit holder can be held liable for fire suppression costs and damages that result from an escaped debris burn.
There are a number of requirements before a permit will be issued. Call DFPA at 672-6507 for more information.
Reed said that residents who live in incorporated cities or within rural fire districts in Riddle, Tri-City, Canyonville, Winston-Dillard, or inside Douglas County Fire District #2 should contact their local fire department regarding the status of debris burning in those areas.
