Last week Roseburg Fire Chief Monte Bryan swore in a new fire marshal and two new firefighters.

Chief Bryan welcomed Fire Marshal Bryan Jewell and firefighters Eric Goodboe and Garrett Russell to the department at a swearing-in ceremony Thursday morning in the Umpqua Room of the Public Safety Center. Led by Chief Bryan, the new staff simultaneously read the fire department’s Affirmation of Service which includes, “I will fulfill my fundamental duties to serve my community by safeguarding and preserving life, health and property against fire and other perils”.

The ceremony was attended by city officials and other Roseburg Fire Department personnel.

Jewell has accepted the position of Fire Marshal, now being vacated by Bryan, who was promoted to Fire Chief in April and has been serving in both capacities before his replacement was hired. Jewell previously worked as an arson investigator for the Oregon State Police and had been with that agency for the past 15 years. Jewell served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps and received an Associate degree in Criminal Justice through Columbia Southern University. Jewell is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program in Criminal Justice Administration/Arson Investigation.

Goodboe has accepted the position of firefighter. He is a registered Emergency Medical Technician, both nationally and with the State of Oregon. He received an Associate in the Fire Science degree this month from Rogue Community College.

Russell also has accepted a firefighter position. He is enrolled in the Fire Science and Paramedicine program through Umpqua Community College. Once completed, he will hold degrees in both fields of study.

Chief Bryan said with these three hires, the department is back to full staffing levels.
