A Springfield man was jailed following a reported elude incident Monday evening.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 7:50 p.m. a deputy was traveling northbound on Interstate Five, coming up on the Yoncalla/Drain exit. The deputy saw a sedan as it was getting on the freeway a mile further north. The deputy was pacing the vehicle at 87 miles per hour. The deputy activated his emergency lights after a couple of miles. The vehicle being chased increased its speed to 100 miles per hour. After the deputy activated his sirens and notified dispatch, the sedan continued north at speeds between 95 and 103 miles per hour.
Once the vehicles got to the south Cottage Grove exit, the vehicle passed a semi-truck in the fast lane. Once it passed, it swerved over to the slow lane in front of the semi, which had to slam on its breaks. The deputy was able to navigate around the semi and get behind the sedan, which started to take off again. Once the deputy got to close to the back bumper of the vehicle, the driver threw his hands out the window.
After the driver, identified as 38-year-old Frank Nelson was detained, the deputy learned the man was on probation for elude and had his license revoked. The sedan was searched and two glass pipes that contained a crystalized substance were allegedly located. Nelson was charged with attempting to elude police in a vehicle, driving while suspended or revoked, reckless driving and for a warrant. He was detained without bail.
