DFPA CREWS DEAL WITH KENT CREEK FIRE

October 14, 2024 3:00 p.m.

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association dealt with the Kent Creek Fire on Sunday.

Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said at approximately 3:20 p.m. DFPA, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and Lookingglass Rural Fire District responded to a natural cover fire near the 200 block of Kent Creek Road in the Winston area.

Pope said upon arrival at the scene, a moderately moving .25-acre grass fire was found climbing up a hill and moving toward a vacant building. An aggressive initial attack by all responders knocked down the forward spread quickly, eliminating any threat to nearby structures. Pope said crews mopped up the confirmed .65-acre fire. This fire is now on patrol status and will receive three consecutive heat and smoke checks until the area is officially cleared. The cause of the fire was found to be vehicle-related and is under investigation.

Pope said numerous roadside wildfires are caused by vehicles. Tips to help prevent a vehicle from sparking the next wildfire include:

*Ensure all vehicle parts, including tow chains, are secure and not dragging

*Check tires and make sure they receive regular maintenance

*Maintain a vehicle’s exhaust system

*Avoid parking or idling on dry grass.

*Stay on the road. Off-road driving is prohibited under Public Use Restrictions.

*Vehicles traveling in wildland areas are required to have an axe, shovel, and a 2.5- pound or larger fire extinguisher, or a gallon of water.
