FOOD WASTE PREVENTION WEEK AND BEYOND

April 5, 2024 2:50 a.m.

A collaborative effort of several Douglas County organizations has announced a series of events for this year’s National Food Waste Prevention Week. Events will continue throughout the month.

Organizations involved include Thrive Umpqua, Umpqua Valley Farm to School, HealTerra, Umpqua Valley Farmer’s Market, the City of Roseburg and Douglas County OSU Extension Service.

This joint effort aims to guide the community towards better ways of handling food, cutting down on food waste, and learning new methods for dealing with food scraps.

The first event will be on Saturday at Umpqua Valley Farmers Market. Attendees can visit a booth hosted by these organizations to gather information, receive practical advice and learn how small changes in daily habits can contribute to a reduction in food waste.

Upcoming workshops include:

*Thrifty Gardening: Maximizing Resources with Kitchen Scraps and Composting at the Roseburg Senior Center on April 13th at 1:00 p.m.

*Vermicomposting Workshop on April 19th at their Heal Terra composting facility with a worm digester. The session will include a tour of the facility and practical demonstrations of how to use food scraps to feed worms.
