ROSEBURG HAS TIME CAPSULE CEREMONY

October 3, 2022 10:30 a.m.

Roseburg had a time capsule ceremony in front of City Hall Monday morning, as the city celebrates its 150th birthday.

A crowd of about fifty people gathered at 9:00 a.m. Douglas County Historical Society Vice-President Dale Greenley shared information about the community’s history with those attending.

Mayor Larry Rich described items that were donated for the capsule, which is to be opened in fifty years, when the city turns 200. Communications Specialist Suzanne Hurt held the sealed packets up for all to see. The diverse list of items included photos of the Roseburg City Council, a menu from Abby’s Legendary Pizza, a stuffed cow, t-shirt and information about Umpqua Dairy, a copy of Sunday’s edition of The News Review, and much more. There was even information about COVID-19, along with a COVID-19 test and a mask. First Presbyterian Church offered stained glass chards from a window that was blown out of their building in the 1959 Roseburg Blast, along with other church items. Many other organizations offered things for the capsule as well.

Following the presentation, Public Works Department staff started the process to bury the capsule next to City Hall.
