Roseburg Public Library will host a presentation about Nickel Mountain mining and smelting operations and remediation efforts Thursday night September 15th beginning at 6:30 p.m.

A City release said program presenter Larry Broeker worked as a geologist with the Umpqua National Forest from 1990 to 2008. Broeker will cover topics including a geologic overview of the Klamath Mountains, a chronological history of mine activities, formation of laterite deposit, bygone mining and smelting operations and more.

The release said mining and smelting operations were conducted at the site by M.A. Hanna Company from 1954 to 1987 and by Glenbrook Nickel Company from 1987 to 1998. About 650 people were employed at those operations in the 1960s and 1970s.

The event will be held in the Deer Creek room of the library, which will remain open until 8:00 p.m. for the event. For more information, call 492-7050.
