WINDIGO-POTTER-BIG SWAMP FIRE UPDATE

August 17, 2022 11:00 a.m.

The latest update from Northwest Incident Management Team 10 said minimal fire activity is happening on the Windigo Fire. It remains at 1,007 acres. Crews continue to work closely with resource advisors to limit impacts to sensitive resources and complete repair work across the fire area. Repair work mitigates post-fire damages to cultural resources, protects road systems from excessive erosion and provides for public safety.

The Potter Fire, at 473 acres, is showing moderate fire behavior. Firefighters have used bucket drops from helicopters to help protect current fire lines and reduce fire spread. Conditions have allowed for continued burnout operations. On the south flank of the fire, firefighters are working to clear vegetation away from Forest Road 2154 as an indirect fire line and are scouting for possible opportunities to build fire lines on the east flank.

The Big Swamp Fire is still at 121 acres. With minimal fire activity, firefighters have strengthened the line along the east flank, Efforts to establish a fire line down to the Middle Fork of the Willamette River may include installing a sprinkler system to an existing dozer line to the riverbank on the north flank near Forest Road 2153. Mop up operations continue on the south and western portions of the fire. Hose lays are in place around parts of the fire without roads as containment features.

711 personnel are working on the fires. That includes 20 hand crews, 9 engines, 4 dozers, 6 water tenders, and 8 Type 1 helicopters.

Closure orders remain in place for all three fires, for firefighter and public safety. Go to: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/willamette/alerts-notices/?cid=fseprd552029&fbclid=IwAR0ZYB_nXgUizysneDLDX78_8EB2yYEhIEPpPCFfmRxnGSqQH6AnJPHiYOs
