Sutherlin Police jailed a man following an alleged shooting on Saturday.

Police Chief Troy Mills released a report on Tuesday. Mills said the day of the incident, just after 3:00 p.m. SPD officers and deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 300 block of Pine Street following a call that multiple shots had been fired. An investigation later discovered that a 36-year old man followed 32-year old Joshua Pitner to his house to confront him about a prior relationship the second man had been involved in.

Mills said an argument ensued where the first man ended up causing damage to Pitner’s vehicle by kicking it. Pitner went into his residence and returned with a shotgun to confront the first man. Mills said the argument continued and Pitner ended up shooting three rounds of birdshot in the other man’s direction. One round ricocheted off the ground causing several pellets to strike the victim in the shin while another round struck him in the upper leg.

Mills said the victim left the scene and went home. He was later transported by ambulance to CHI Mercy Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Mills said the man will make a full recovery. No other individuals were hurt during the incident.

Pitner was contacted by SPD officers and was taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and three counts of unlawful use of a weapon. Bail was set at $50,000. Pitner was released on Monday.
