A Douglas County Grand Jury has cleared an officer with the Roseburg Police Department in a recent shooting, and indicted the man shot on multiple attempted murder and other charges.

A release from District Attorney Rick Wesenberg said the Grand Jury determined that the shooting of 39-year old John Kliestik on September 9th was a lawful and justified use of force in order to protect civilian and officer lives.

That evening, officers responded to a home in the 1300 block of Southeast Magnolia Street after it was reported that the suspect was attempting to light his parent’s home on fire while they were inside the residence.

An RPD report said officers verified there were fires inside the home and attempted to make contact with the occupants. They were confronted by Kliestik, who allegedly presented an imminent threat to both his parents, and the officers. One officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect in the leg. After securing Kliestik, rendering aid and extinguishing the fires, medical personnel provided additional care to the suspect. He was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center to be treated. Kliestik was later taken to jail.

The Grand Jury indicted Kliestik on two counts each of attempted murder in the first and second-degree, 2 counts of arson in the first-degree, 5 counts of attempted assault in the first-degree, assault in the second-degree, assaulting a public safety officer, 2 counts of menacing, and 2 counts of recklessly endangering another person.

The DA’s release said due to the ongoing criminal prosecution of Kliestik, no further information is being released at this time.
