The Roseburg School Board had its first in-person meeting in the district boardroom since March of 2020, on Wednesday night.

Since then, the group shifted to meeting on a virtual platform before having some meetings in-person in a socially distanced setting with masks required, in the large Rose Theater at Roseburg High School.

Newly elected board members Ann Krimetz and Andrew Shirtcliff were given the Oath of Office by Superintendent Jared Cordon. Board Chair Rebecca Larson and Vice Chair Reverend Howard Johnson will continue their roles for another year after being unanimously re-elected.

Cordon gave a review of district operations, going over the role of both the Superintendent and the Board. Cordon talked about summer classes that are taking place in schools around the district, noting the enthusiasm he has seen from students taking part.

The board voted 6-1 to spend $236,000 on over 50 security cameras at 9 schools in the district. Shirtcliff was the lone no vote, questioning the cost of the equipment. On a unanimous vote, the Board approved spending $123,000 on laptop computers for instructional staff.

Cordon said he plans to head up the implementation of operational guidelines under the state’s Ready Schools Safe Learners Resiliency Framework for the 2021-2022 school year. Cordon said an update on those guidelines is expected late next week.

The next Roseburg School Board meeting will be August 11th in the district boardroom.
