Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office jailed a man after he allegedly eluded police on Sunday.

A DCSO report said at about 2:50 p.m. a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on Chief Miwaleta Lane in Canyonville, because the plate came back as stolen. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and a pursuit ensued. The report said the vehicle ultimately traveled south from Canyonville on Interstate Five. During the pursuit the suspect was allegedly passing cars on the shoulder and driving recklessly. The pursuit was terminated. The vehicle was relocated on Azalea-Glen Road but the driver again continued to elude. The vehicle eventually crashed in the 2000 block of Reuben Road. The driver was eventually placed in custody.

The driver was identified as 45-year old Robert Mathis. The report said the suspect showed numerous indicators of impairment and admitted to using methamphetamine and heroin. The report said meth was located in plain view in the vehicle.

Mathis was charged with eluding police, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, reckless endangering, second-degree counts of disorderly conduct and theft, DUII, and for a warrant. After arraignment, bail was set at $30,000.
