One man is dead, two women were also shot, and a 33-year old suspect has been charged with second degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault following a shooting at a Roseburg Motel on Monday.
Sergeant Daniel Allen of the Roseburg Police said just before 3:00 p.m. the Douglas County 911 center received numerous phone calls regarding the incident at the Budget 16 Motel in the 1000 block of Northeast Stephens. Allen said initial reports were that a man had shot several people at that location.
Officers from RPD, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police responded to the scene along with emergency personnel from the Roseburg Fire Department and ambulance personnel.
Allen said one of the reporting parties was an off-duty RPD sergeant who happened to be at a business across the street from the shooting. That sergeant stayed in contact with dispatch personnel and on-duty officers to apprise them of information regarding the suspect’s movement and actions. Approximately two minutes after the start of the incident, the report said the suspect crossed the road into the parking lot of OK’s Auto Supply and the off-duty sergeant tackled the suspect to the ground. The suspect was restrained until on-duty officers could take him into custody. RPD has declined to release the name of that sergeant.
Allen said during the subsequent investigation it was learned that three people were injured in the shooting. A 36-year old man died of his injuries on the scene. A 44-year old female and a 40-year old female also appeared to have gunshot injuries. Both women were transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center via ambulance for treatment. The 44-year old was later transported to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield and eventually to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. She is being treated for life-threatening injuries. The 40-year old received significant injuries, but is listed in fair condition at Mercy according to a hospital spokesperson.
The suspect, 33-year old Devin McNamara, was treated at Mercy and later taken to jail. Bail was set at $750,000.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is continuing its investigation. Allen said the names of the victims are not being released at this time until next of kin can be notified.
