FEMA SAYS BE ALERT FOR FRAUD AND SCAMS

Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in the wake of the recent wildfires, impacted residents should be alert for fraud and scams.

Nate Custer of FEMA said when natural disasters occur, it is common for some people to try to take advantage of survivors by posing as official disaster aid workers, charities or government officials. He said residents should never give out their personal information unless the person asking for it has valid identification.

Anyone suspecting fraud should call the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721. Complaints can also be made by contacting local law enforcement.

Custer said registration is open for those affected by the wildfires in several counties, including Douglas. Those impacted can apply by using the FEMA app, or by calling 800-621-3362. The toll-free line operates from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., seven days a week.
