The Glide Rural Fire Protection District has named its volunteer of the year.
Corey Fenton has been selected for the award.
Information from staff said in November, personnel and volunteers are able to nominate someone for the honor. The selection is made by Fire Chief Ted Damewood.
A release from Glide Fire said Fenton is both a Firefighter and an Emergency Medical Technician. The EMT role is pending final official approval. The release said he recently taught fire science for high school students through the department, volunteers for night duty, and helps maintain equipment. During last year’s “snowmageddon” event, Fenton stayed at the station for 19 days straight and went on 54 emergency calls that week. He said “it was a fun, exhausting, learning experience”.
The release said Fenton’s background includes serving in the Navy for six years, working as a private security contractor and driving log trucks. He received a medal from the Navy for outstanding volunteer service for his work at a military hospital for wounded warriors in 2010.
Glide Fire responded to 626 calls in 2019. That is the highest annual call volume since the District was founded in 1973, according to the release.
