A presentation about Ranked-Choice Voting along with a simulated ranked-choice election will be given at an event presented by the League of Women Voters of Umpqua Valley on Tuesday January 21st.
Barbara Klein of the League in the Rogue Valley will lead the presentation, answer questions and discuss local options. A release from the local group said when there are more than two candidates in a race, ranked-choice voting allows voters to vote their true choices without fear of splitting the vote. With the ranked-choice plan, there is no need for both a primary and general election, as the vote counting process produces an instant runoff and a winner with majority support.
The release said ranked-choice voting is used in some U.S. cities and in the State of Maine. Citizens of Benton County in Oregon will use it in November 2020 in general elections for the county offices of sheriff and commissioner.
