The victim in a hit and run collision in northern California has been identified as a former Roseburg resident.
An official with Mercy Medical Center in Redding told News Radio 1240 KQEN that 37-year old Patrick McConkey was brought into their facility on Friday and is deceased. A report from the California Highway Patrol said late Thursday evening a male pedestrian was walking southbound on U.S. Highway 101 in the Smith River area, approximately 14 miles north of Crescent City, when he was hit by an unknown vehicle.
The release said the vehicle did not stop, and fled the scene in a southbound direction.
The victim was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City before being life-flighted to Mercy in Redding. Initial reports by media in that area indicted the victim had been sent to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg. He was listed as living in Roseburg in the CHP report, causing confusion in the case.
On Monday, a family member also confirmed the victim’s identity and told the News Review that McConkey had moved to northern California a few months ago.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation. CHP officials referred KQEN to the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office for more details in the case. That agency has not responded to repeated requests for information.
