DEFAZIO CLARIFIES HIS OPPOSITION TO JORDAN COVE

Staff with Congressman Peter DeFazio said a letter sent to supporters last week was meant to clarify his position on the proposed Jordan Cove and Pacific Connector gas pipeline project.
His letter said he has never supported the Jordan Cove project for numerous reasons.
DeFazio said “the federal approval process is dictated by unelected political appointees, it authorizes the taking of private land under eminent domain and it would have serious and detrimental effects on the earth’s environment”.
His comments, forwarded to News Radio 1240 KQEN by staff on Wednesday, said “the project would irreparably harm the land, livelihood and communities of southern Oregon”. DeFazio said the proposed pipeline route would travel through hundreds of miles of public lands and streams which are home to endangered species.
DeFazio said while he does not support the project, “I am unable to influence its approval or denial”. He said the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is an independent, bureaucratic agency whose commissioners are appointed by and responsive only to the President of the United States.
DeFazio said that is why he introduced legislation to reverse FERC’s eminent domain powers, and stop projects such as Jordan Cove “from taking people’s property and degrading critical watersheds”.
DeFazio concluded saying whether FERC approves the Jordan Cove Project or not, he will continue to work with leaders from the coastal and rural areas of his district to make investments in infrastructure that “create jobs and strengthen the economy”. DeFazio also cited work that he said ensures that ports and harbors are maintained, fisheries and fishing industry are protected, and waterways are dredged so that maritime traffic can navigate safely.
