The Castle Fire burning on the Umpqua National Forest is up to 2,758 acres and 30 percent contained as of midday Tuesday.

696 personnel are working on the fire which is burning 23 miles northeast of Tiller.

An update from California Incident Management Team 13 said firefighters continue to bolster containment lines with firing operations on the north and southeast sides of the fire, ahead of predicted hotter and drier conditions over the coming days. Mop up and patrol continue in the northwest and southwest sections of the fire perimeter. Backing, flanking and vigorous small tree torching is still being observed within the fire perimeter. A spot fire continues to hold to two acres with a fire line and hose surrounding it. No further spot fires have been detected. The Castle Fire is being managed for full suppression.

A thermal trough over the area will result in a significant warming trend that will continue throughout the week. High temperatures and critically low humidity in the afternoons will result in a heightened risk of fire activity.

The Umpqua National Forest continues with the expanded closure area still in place to protect the public and provide a safe environment for fire fighters. All National Forest System lands, roads and trails remain closed to the public within the closure area.
