DFPA WORKING ON LIGHTNING RECONNAISSANCE FOLLOWING STORM

The Douglas Forest Protective Association has been actively involved in lightning reconnaissance and initial attacks following a prolonged lighting storm that began at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said the storm resulted in 76 registered strikes.

Pope said overnight crews responded to 14 smoke investigations, with only 2 confirmed as fires.

*Tyee Mountain Fire: Located 1 mile north of Tyee Road near Umpqua. It is estimated to be 0.25 to 1 acre in size. It is 100 percent lined, and 95 percent mopped up.

*Brushy Butte Fire: Located 8 miles southeast of Roseburg, estimated to be 0.02 acres. It is 100 percent lined, and 95 percent mopped up.

Pope said DFPA began air reconnaissance Thursday morning at 8:45 a.m. to survey the entire district for any signs of smoke. Ground personnel will continue monitoring the area and respond quickly to any reports of smoke. Additionally, camera detection operators will closely monitor 36 cameras, scanning for any indications of fire.

Fire danger remains HIGH across land protected by the DFPA.
