In the KQEN Business Spotlight:
Over 80 employees of the Roseburg Albertson’s store on Northwest Stewart Parkway are seeking a new job after company officials announced its pending closure last week.
Albertsons Portland Director of Communications Jill McGinnis told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that some employees may be able to move to the local co-owned Safeway store. McGinnis said, “Our team is working with affected employees and the labor unions, where applicable, to attempt to find them other work that is both consistent with the applicable law and/or labor agreement”.
The approximately 60,000 square foot building housing Albertsons was constructed in 2001, after the company purchased the property from a local church. Before that it was housed in the North Roseburg Plaza on Northeast Stephens Street for decades, at least as far back as 1975, according to company records. Ironically that location houses the Big Lots store, which is also closing down.
As to the property’s future, McGinnis said it is premature to speculate about what type of business may open in the current Albertsons location.
Most of Roseburg’s other major grocery stores are close by Albertsons. WinCo Foods is next door on Northwest Stewart Parkway, with Sherm’s Thunderbird Market located just west of WinCo. Fred Meyer, on Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard is approximately a mile way, not far from Grocery Outlet. To the east, Safeway is just over 1.5 miles away from Albertsons and is on Northeast Stephens Street.
