Deputies jailed a man Wednesday for an alleged past assault incident.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 10:00 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to the 2000 block of Roberts Creek Road. The victim did not call law enforcement to report the crime, at the time it took place. The victim said the suspect became very upset and she believed the man was going to kill her. The victim claimed the man also threatened to shoot her with his gun.

The report said the victim said the man strangled her as they were driving, to the point of unconsciousness. She reportedly remembered the man dragging her out of his vehicle by her arm. She said once she regained full consciousness, she went back to her vehicle and saw that she had sustained multiple injuries.

During the interview, the deputy observed obvious injuries that corresponded with the victim’s statement. The deputy later contacted 54-year-old Matt Fortune who claimed that everything was in self-defense and that he was not the aggressor. Fortune was taken into custody and charged with fourth-degree assault, and two counts each of strangulation and menacing. He was detained without bail. Fortune was released early Friday.
