A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday above 1,500 feet while a Winter Weather Advisory will be in place from Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. through Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. above 500 feet, for much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is expected above 1,500 feet. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are expected with up to 12 inches possible over higher elevations. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 45 miles per hour over higher terrain. For the Advisory areas between 500 and 1,500 feet, 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected.

All areas in Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties above 500 feet will experience some degree of winter weather impacts. For the Warning area, this includes lower elevation passes on Interstate 5, highways 42 and 227, and the foothills.

Forecasters said travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and afternoon commutes.

Snow levels will start at 4,000 to 5,000 feet Monday night, lowering to between 1,500 feet and 2,000 feet late Tuesday morning and afternoon. They will lower further to 500 feet Tuesday evening with potential winter impacts at the valley floor through Wednesday morning.

Travel is strongly discouraged due to dangerous conditions. Those who must travel should keep tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged phone with them.
