Monday is President’s Day, also celebrated as Washington’s Birthday.

As a national holiday, federal, state, county and city offices are closed. No regular mail will be delivered. Schools are not open. Banks and credit unions are closed. Many professional offices are not open, while most retail outlets are operating on their regular schedule.

Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, the holiday became popularly known as President’s Day after it was moved as part of the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act. That legislation was an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers.
