Onward Roseburg is seeking volunteers to help open the Roseburg Warming Center from Monday night through Thursday morning.

A City of Roseburg release said everyone in need of temporary overnight shelter on the especially cold winter nights will be welcome. The center is housed at the Roseburg Senior Center, 1614 Southeast Stephens Street. Operator Kimetha Stallings will watch the weather forecast and will consider extending the opening to Thursday and Friday nights.

The National Weather Service is predicting an overnight low near the freezing mark Monday. Rain before 10:00 p.m. and then rain and/or snow with a snow level lowering to 500 feet early Tuesday are expected. Lows in the low to mid 20’s are predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Stallings said, “These are dangerous conditions. Onward appreciates everyone in the community who supports the warming center’s efforts”.

Check-in begins each night at 6:00 p.m. with cots available for 60 guests and volunteers. A free senior center shuttle will make a circuit around town to pick up guests starting at about 5:30 p.m. and will operate again the next morning. Individuals can arrive at anytime during the night and can stay until 8:00 a.m. A cot, blanket and pillow plus hot dinner and breakfast are provided.
