POLICE CONFIRM ATTEMPTED MURDER SUSPECT IS DEAD FOLLOWING STANDOFF

February 1, 2023 10:20 a.m.

The Grants Pass Police Department has confirmed that attempted murder suspect Benjamin Foster is dead following a standoff that began late Tuesday afternoon.

Lieutenant Jeff Hattersley told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that Foster had been spotted in the city earlier in the day, then returned to the scene of last Tuesday night’s crime. That incident resulted in a female victim being severely beaten. She remains in critical condition at a Grants Pass hospital.

Hattersley said Tuesday a several-hour standoff took place and Foster shot himself before being taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital but died later in the evening.

Foster was also charged with a similar crime against a woman in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2019. Hattersley said Foster returned to the crime scene before being taken into custody that time, as well.

Hattersley told KQEN, “The community is now safe from Benjamin Foster”.

Police Chief Warren Hensman will hold a joint press conference at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Grants Police Department to discuss the resolution in the case. Representatives from the Oregon State Police, Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office will also be available for comment.

The press conference will be streamed on the City of Grants Pass Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/grantspassoregon
