FIRE SEASON ENDS IN COOS AND WESTERN DOUGLAS COUNTIES

Fire season has ended in Coos County and western Douglas County, on lands protected by the Coos Forest Protective Association.

Jef Chase said rainfall has not been consistent across the district. Chase said Coos and Douglas counties have received sufficient rainfall over the last few weeks to significantly lower fire danger levels. However, Curry County has received less than one inch of rain over the same time.

CFPA lifted fire season for Coos and western Douglas County effective Tuesday. However, fire season is still in effect for Curry County residents until this Saturday.

Chase said termination of fire season means that debris burning is now allowed, but residents should use caution as burners are responsible for maintaining control of their burns at all times. Oregon law allows the burning of paper and woody materials. However, the burning of garbage, plastic or other petroleum-based materials is prohibited. Burning of logging debris is regulated year-round and is not allowed at this time. Those who live inside a city should contact their local fire department to check on restrictions for debris burning.

Chase said the end of fire season also means the end of public use restrictions for recreation, but residents should still check with the owner of the land they want to recreate on, to make sure they don’t have any restrictions.
