ODOT: PREPARE FOR WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS

October 21, 2022 3:00 a.m.

Staff with the Oregon Department of Transportation said drivers should prepare for winter driving conditions this weekend.

A release said National Weather Service forecasts predict low temperatures and rain will bring several inches of snow to high Cascade areas and passes above 4,000 feet between Friday and Monday. Travelers should prepare for wet and snow conditions during the day and early morning ice.

ODOT District Manager Jeremiah Griffin said higher temperatures at lower elevations can be deceiving. Griffin said, “It may be warm when you start your trip, but as you head into or over the mountains, temperatures drop and conditions can change quickly”. Griffin said motorists should prepare before they leave and be ready to adjust to changing road conditions.

To prepare for winter driving:

*Carry tire chains in vehicles and practice putting them on

*Inspect the vehicle being driven. Make sure that tires have good tread and windshield wipers that are clean and in good condition

*Make sure the vehicle’s heater and defroster are working well

*Pack warm clothes, extra snacks and water, and any medications that may be needed if there is a delay

On the road, drivers should slow down, give other vehicles extra space, and drive according to conditions. Those using GPS navigation should double check the route as some GPS systems may lead drivers down unmaintained back roads.
