Pfizer Recalling Blood Pressure Meds

3/23/22  7:00 a.m.

Pfizer is recalling a blood pressure drug due to elevated levels of a potential carcinogenic impurity.

The company warned consumers this week of several tainted lots of Accuretic, as well as two other versions of the drug, quinapril and hydro-chlorothiazide, because of the presence of a possible cancer-causing compound that tested above the acceptable daily intake level.

The Food and Drug Administration said the compounds are common in lower levels in water and foods, including cured and grilled meats, dairy products, and vegetables.

The medications are prescribed for the treatment of hypertension to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.

The FDA said the recall is voluntary, and the company says that as of Monday, it has not received any reports of adverse events related to the drugs.

Pfizer suggests patients taking the tablets should consult with their health care provider or pharmacy to determine whether they’ve been given an affected batch.

Patients can also call 888-843-0247 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for help.
