WARMING SHELTERS REOPENS THIS WEEK

February 21, 2022 3:20 a.m.

With this week’s forecast calling for possible rain and snow, and cold low temperatures, an overnight warming shelter is reopening in Roseburg.

A City of Roseburg release said the shelter at 406 Northeast Winchester will be open Monday night through Thursday night. The Roseburg Senior Center will cater two hot meals at dinner and breakfast, according to shelter operator Kimetha Stallings of Onward Roseburg.

The release said the shelter can use donations of blankets and pillows. Blankets must be washable. Large blankets shouldn’t be donated because of the difficulties in washing them.

Check-in begins nightly at 6:00 p.m. Those in need of shelter should arrive by 9:00 p.m. A cot, blanket and pillow are provided for anyone staying the night. Overnight guests can remain at the shelter until 7:00 a.m. the next morning.

Anyone interested in volunteering this week can call or text 541-236-2089. Shifts are 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. and from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

The release said the shelter and Onward Roseburg has a limited supply of tents, tarps and sleeping bags. They will accept donations of those survival gear items to give out if the center becomes full and must turn anyone away. The maximum capacity is 24 guests. Donations of sweatshirts and jeans are also welcome.

A supply of thermal underwear, backpacks, handmade hat/scarf sets, socks, hand warmers, bungee cords, women’s zip-up sweaters, hygiene kits and umbrellas are available to be given out.

In addition to the warming shelter, the Roseburg Rescue Mission offers overnight shelter at 752 Southeast Pine Street.
