A Sutherlin man was jailed for allegedly breaking into a vehicle and for a weapon charge on Tuesday.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at 12:50 a.m. two deputies were responding to an unrelated incident near the corner of Garden Valley Road and Fisher Road, when they observed an unoccupied pickup parked along the road. A few minutes later, the vehicle was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then pulled in behind a business and slowly moved to the front of the building.

41-year old Nicholas Schmid exited his vehicle and asked for directions. The report said the suspect said he didn’t have a driver’s license and appeared nervous. A deputy was able to see a checkbook for a resident on Fisher Road in plain sight. A subsequent investigation led to Schmid admitting to entering a vehicle and stealing several items, all of which were recovered from the suspect’s pickup.

Schmid was taken into custody and 6.26 grams of methamphetamine and .77 grams of heroin were allegedly located on his person. The man is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Charges included unlawful entry to a motor vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and for second-degree theft. Bail was set at $68,750.
