Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K9 Zoro tracked down a suspect in a burglary on Saturday night.
A DCSO report said at approximately 10:40 p.m. deputies were dispatched after a caller said there was a burglary in progress at the residence in the 1000 block of North Gazley Road in the Myrtle Creek area. The reporting party advised that there were two males inside the home and a female associated with a sub-compact vehicle had fled after she was confronted.
Undersheriff Brad O’Dell said while responding, deputies located the vehicle in question and conducted a traffic stop. Deputies detained the driver, a 34-year-old woman from Canyonville. She was taken into custody and charged with conspiracy to commit a call C felony and for unlawful possession of methamphetamine.
Upon arrival, deputies contacted the victim who reported that there had been two men inside the home. The victim advised that one had fled on foot while the second one was possibly still inside.
O’Dell said K9 Zoro was deployed inside the residence after numerous announcements were made that the canine would be searching the home and instructing any inside to surrender. There was no response.
K9 Zoro conducted a search of the residence but did not locate anyone inside. Deputies then began searching the surrounding property for the fleeing suspects.
O’Dell said K9 Zoro led his handler to a large field and began tracking north. After a short distance, Zoro showed strong interest in an area of tall grass, indicating the presence of fresh human scent. Zoro continued tracking, eventually turning east.
After approximately 15 yards, a 50-year-old Canyonville man suddenly stood up from the tall grass with his hands raised. K9 Zoro began backing at the suspect until deputies took him into custody. The man was charged with second-degree burglary. Both people were detained without bail.
O’Dell said deputies and K9 Zoro continued searching the area for the second male suspect, but he was not located.
