Oregon State Police arrested a man following a grass fire on Sunday.

An OSP report said just after 9:30 p.m. multiple witnesses called and reported the fire on the shoulder of Interstate Five southbound, about two miles south of Sutherlin. The witnesses said a male transient had been seen in the area intentionally starting the fire with a lighter.

The report said passerby’s and a local resident were able to control the fire until fire units arrived. The transient was located and admitted that he may have caused the fire, due to a cigarette.

The man, identified as 49-year old Brian Stumpp, was charged with reckless burning, recklessly endangering another, and for third-degree criminal mischief. Bail was set at $13,750.
