Local officials are urging caution for those using fireworks during the July 4th weekend.

A release from the City of Roseburg said although the city allows the use of legal fireworks, it is the sole responsibility of the person using the fireworks to do so legally and safely, while being respectful of their neighbors and neighbors property.

The release said any “consumer” fireworks purchased from a licensed vendor in Roseburg are legal to use without a permit. Fireworks must be purchased in Oregon. Residents should use fireworks on private property with adequate clearance from dry grass, trees, bushes and combustible structures. Fireworks can’t legally be used at parks, campgrounds, forests or beaches.

Oregon law prohibits the possession, use, or sale of any firework that flies into the air, explodes, or behaves in an uncontrollable and unpredictable manner without a permit issued by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office.  Bottle rockets, Roman candles, and firecrackers are illegal in Oregon without a permit.

A release from the Douglas County Board of Commissioners said this year, with dangerously high fire danger conditions, severe drought and drier than normal vegetation, grass and forested areas, coupled with the prediction of more extreme hot weather headed to the region, Commissioners are concerned with the safety of residents and local communities. The release said many fire-protection partners have already issued warnings, tips and safety reminders for the holiday weekend.
