April 14, 2021 3:30 a.m.

Students will have new options for learning next school year as Roseburg Public Schools rolls out its comprehensive K-12 online learning programs.

Assistant Superintendent Michelle Knee said these programs will provide flexibility for students who thrive in a self-paced educational environment that maintains local connections and opportunities for engagement.

Knee said registration will open Friday for traditional in-person schooling, Roseburg Virtual Schools for K-5 students, and the district’s online program for secondary students enrolled at Joseph Lane, Fremont and Roseburg High School.

Knee said “We are incredibly excited to offer these new choices for students and families who prefer the flexibility made possible through online schooling”. She said what makes these programs special is that students will maintain local connections to district staff members while enjoying the ability to learn at their own pace.

An RPS release said K-5 students who enroll at Roseburg Virtual School will learn independently online with support from licensed, highly qualified RPS teachers and their parents serving as learning coaches. The release said middle school and high school students will enroll at their own local school, but will also learn independently online full time. Secondary school teachers will serve as support mentors and teachers in the digital curriculum program, Apex, will assist with instruction. All students will have the opportunity to participate in local extracurricular activities, athletics and other engagement experiences.
