The Douglas Education Service District is seeking public school substitute teachers to work in local districts.

A release said individuals with bachelor’s degrees can qualify.

In the county, public school substitute teachers can gross up to $211 per day. Daily rates increase with long-term assignments. All eligible substitutes participate in the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System.

The release said it is not required for people to have an education degree or a background in education. Qualified applicants can become a substitute with a Restricted Substitute Teaching License and ESD will instruct applicants about the required process. Individuals may be in the classroom as soon as the required criteria has been satisfied.

Douglas ESD provides substitute teachers for all public-school districts in the county.

Douglas ESD Director of Human Resources Holly Hill said, “The opportunity for substitute teachers is both flexible and rewarding”.

The release said generally substitutes have the opportunity to work as much or as little as the person chooses. Substitutes can choose to work one day every eight weeks or as much as every day, Mondays through Fridays. They can choose where to work and can work for one school or even one teacher. However, they can choose to work for all schools and every grade level throughout the entire county. Currently substitute teachers provide both in-person and remote learning to students.

The release said due to the pandemic, substitutes receive training in COVID-19 safety, technology tools, engagement strategies and stress management.
