The 2020 PartnerSports Camp will be replaced with a celebratory parade and a ceremony.
Bryan Hinson of the Douglas Education Service District said ESD and the YMCA of Douglas County are working together for a special event in place of what would have been the 15th year of the local camp.
The release said PartnerSports Camp is a two-week event that pairs campers with disabilities with partners without disabilities, for a fun-filled learning experience featuring various sports like tennis, basketball and swimming along with traditional activities such as hiking, fishing, crafts, and campfire cooking. Hinson said due to the COVID-19 situation this year, the camp, which would have been held in July, has been cancelled.
Hinson said the camp has provided a free opportunity for kids with and without disabilities, ages 12 to 21, for the past 14 years to come together each summer to celebrate each other while developing skills and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Douglas ESD and the YMCA will host an event to celebrate everyone who would have participated in the camp this year. The organizations are planning a car parade that will culminate in the parking lot of the YMCA. A brief ceremony will be held to celebrate the many years of camper and partner participation.
Additional details will be released soon. Parents and former partners and campers can expect to receive a phone call from staff in the coming weeks. More information will also be available at: www.douglasesd.k12.or.us.
