An elderly man is hospitalized after his vehicle crashed into two electrical boxes controlling the traffic lights at the corner of Oregon 42 and Main Street in Winston Thursday afternoon.
A release from Winston Police said at about 3:35 p.m. officers responded to a report of the single vehicle accident. It caused the traffic lights at the intersection to quit working. Due to the impact from the vehicle, one of the boxes was hurled into the side of the Old West Building causing damage to the window and one of the doors. The release said several motorists stopped to assist the driver, who was having a medical emergency. CPR was performed until the Winston Dillard Fire Department responded and transported the man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was identified as Anton Lipowski and is listed in serious condition at Mercy Medical, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Crews from the Oregon Department of Transportation responded to fix the electrical boxes so the lights could operate. That process took nearly five hours, and involved assistance from Pacific Power staff as well. Flaggers controlled traffic going through the intersection while the repairs took place.
