A Douglas County woman was among 21 people arrested during a protest at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem on Thursday.
A report from the Oregon State Police said about 75 people entered the building at about 2:00 p.m. to protest the proposed Jordan Cove liquified natural gas project. The News Review is reporting that hundreds of protesters, wearing red, covered the steps of the building. Some were potentially impacted landowners, while others were environmentalists, youth activists and members of several Native American tribes, according to the paper.
The OSP report said as is normal, the Capitol closed at 5:30 p.m. Some of the protestors remained in the building and refused to leave, requesting to speak to Governor Kate Brown. The report said Brown addressed the protestors and answered questions at 8:30 p.m. Many of the remaining protestors left the building after that.
At approximately 9:00 p.m. OSP Superintendent Travis Hampton addressed the group, asking them to depart or they would be subject to arrest.
The people who remained were taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail on charges of second-degree criminal trespass. 72-year old Sandra Lyon of Days Creek, was among those detained. The News Review reported that Lyon provided a written statement during the rally where she said that she and her husband have ranched their property for 29 years and for 15 of those years, have been fighting the proposed pipeline project.
