NEW AQUATIC FACILITY OPENS AT DOUGLAS COUNTY YMCA

July 10, 2019 6:30 a.m.
The new aquatic center is now open at the Douglas County YMCA in Roseburg.
Marisa Fink, the YMCA Executive Director, said “today is a day for the history books,” as she gave the opening remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony held for the new facilities at the Y’s longtime location on NW Stewart Parkway on Tuesday.
Fink described the progress the YMCA has made in its goals over the past 58 years and thanked all the people who came together to make the capitol campaign a success and the new aquatic center a reality.
Campaign Chair and YMCA Board Member, Shelley Briggs Loosley explained the extent of the capitol campaign and the several years of hard work, construction, teamwork and patience that led to Tuesday’s grand opening.
The new $3.9 million aquatic center includes a new North Pool, complete with easy access steps descending into the pool, a water slide inside a custom built tree house built by Tom Pappas of Victory Builders, a larger shallow family area, and a projector with a screen on the wall above the pool so movies and videos can be incorporated into the experiences of pool-goers.
There is also a new sauna, new viewing area, new locker rooms, and two new hydrotherapy pools.
Some behind the scenes improvements were made to the electrical system, fire sprinkler system, and the climate systems.
A new steam room is currently under construction and will open in the future.
Special thanks were given to State Representative Gary Leif for his help to get the final steps of the state certification done in time to have the grand opening Tuesday.
