On Tuesday, Congressman Peter DeFazio and two colleagues urged that Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland immediately issue emergency Endangered Species Act protections for the Northern Rocky population of the gray wolf.

A release said on February 10th, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White restored protections under the Endangered Species Act for gray wolves in much of the lower 48 states. However, the Northern Rocky population remains unprotected.

DeFazio, along with Representatives Don Beyer of Virginia and Raul Grijalva of Arizona, sent a letter to Haaland which said, “While we certainly support the Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to conduct a status review, we remain concerned as wolves across the U.S. and especially in the northern Rockies continue to be killed”. The lawmakers said that such actions warrant an emergency listing to protect the species from dangerous reductions in population size that could lead to extinction.
