ROSEBURG SCHOOLS MOVE PK-5 REOPENING TARGET DATE

November 30, 2020 4:45 p.m.

Roseburg Public Schools have moved their target date for resuming PK-5 instruction to January 7th.

Superintendent Jared Cordon said RPS received the latest COVID-19 case count from the state on Monday. Cordon said as expected, local case numbers have unfortunately not decreased to levels that will allow the district to reopen to in-person learning on December 7th. He said the total number of cases over the past two weeks is 276 with the test positively rate at 5.2 percent, according to the School Metrics Dashboard.

Cordon said the development requires the district to make “…the difficult decision to delay plans for the return to in-person learning for our PK-5 students”.  The release said in consideration of the upcoming winter break, as well as a likely continued rise in case numbers in the coming weeks, the district has decided to push the target date for reopening to a few days after the break. Cordon said the target date for reopening to hybrid in-person instruction for grades 6-12 remains set at January 25th, the start of the second semester.

Cordon said in order for students in all elementary grades to return to in-person learning, case numbers will need to fall below 100 cases per 100,000 people over a combined two-week period.
