Wildfire survivors in Douglas County are encouraged to apply with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, even if they have insurance.
A release from the Oregon Office of Emergency Management said under federal law, FEMA cannot duplicate insurance settlements or other benefits, but there are cases where insured survivors might still be eligible for FEMA help. That includes:
*Where settlements are delayed longer than 30 days after a claim is filed
*Settlements do not fully cover all losses and needs
*Additional living expenses provided in the insurance policy have been exhausted
*Suitable rental resources cannot be located in the community
The release said people should file their insurance claims as soon as possible. To apply with FEMA call 800-621-FEMA or go to https://www.disasterassistance.gov/. The FEMA mobile app can be used as well.
After applying with FEMA, those impacted have 12 months to let the agency know if their insurance coverage was not enough and they want to be considered for help.
Staff with FEMA are available from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Glide High School as well.
