A 34-year old man was jailed by Oregon State Police Monday afternoon, following a police chase on US Highway 101 that started in Douglas County, and ended up in Coos Bay.
An OSP report said dispatch received a report involving an SUV being driven recklessly on Highway 38. The vehicle was eventually spotted headed southbound on Highway 101. Probable cause was established and a traffic stop was initiated. The report said the driver yielded but had no identification with him. A strong odor of marijuana was emanating from the vehicle. The suspect reportedly said the vehicle belonged to a friend, but he had no idea as to that person’s location. The man also said he was headed home to California.
The report said the driver then took off southbound at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles in an unsafe manner, on the right and in no passing zones. The suspect continued southbound into North Bend where City of North Bend Police successfully deployed spike strips that partially disabled the vehicle. The vehicle continued southbound into Coos Bay where the driver lost control and struck a curb.
After being taken into custody, law enforcement determined the man had no drivers license but did have warrants for his arrest. He was identified as William Tillman. The vehicle had been stolen out of Portland earlier in the day. Marijuana, inhalants, and possible stolen property were found in the vehicle.
Tillman was held for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and for reckless driving. He was also cited on a number of counts with additional charges possible in the case. Bail was set at $56,250. He was taken into custody at around 4:20 p.m.
