A 39-year old man was jailed by Oregon State Police Thursday night following an alleged incident on Interstate Five.
An OSP report said troopers from the Cottage Grove office responded to the Cottage Grove Police Department just before 8:00 p.m. The report said a female victim said that while she was driving northbound with several children near Oakland, Jeremy Cunningham began yelling at her. As the situation escalated the suspect allegedly grabbed and pushed the steering wheel and the victim’s right leg down on the accelerator. The victim believed the suspect was trying to make the vehicle crash. The report said the suspect started throwing trash out of the vehicle and then struck the victim’s face with an aluminum can several times. The victim then crushed the can on the back on the victim’s neck. The report said the suspect struck the victim’s face with a closed fist several times again before the victim struck back.
A bystander reported the incident to OSP. Soon after the suspect apparently passed out and the victim continued to Cottage Grove where police were contacted.
Cunningham was detained for seven counts of recklessly endangering another person and for 1 count of harassment. He was released from custody on Friday.
