The Roseburg School Board is meeting on Wednesday night.
The agenda for the regular meeting includes only two items: A discussion on the “Aligning to Thrive” report which recommends that Fir Grove School be closed at the end of the current school year, and possible action on that recommendation.
In the report, Superintendent Jared Cordon recommended that the district’s elementary school system consolidate from eight schools to seven schools due to an enrollment decline of over 10 percent in the last decade. Cordon also cited rising operational costs and significant needs across the district’s aging facilities. Cordon said Fir Grove currently serves under 200 students and under the proposal those students could be accommodated at Fullerton, Hucrest and Eastwood schools. He said this would be done without increasing transportation costs or creating long bus rides. Fir Grove School was built in 1960, and the report said the building faces significant maintenance needs in the coming years.
District staff said the length of the regular meeting will depend on how much time the board needs to hear answers on any questions they have after their review of the report. Staff said it’s the board’s prerogative as to how they move forward with action items, so it’s not known if a vote on the recommendation will be made at this meeting.
The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the district’s offices on Northwest Valley View Drive. It is open to the public, but no public comment is scheduled.
